Tips For Lower Water Bills | Arizona Plumbing Service

Kids Swimming

It’s no surprise that our water bills go up during the summer. Kids are home from school so more showers and baths need to happen, pools need to be refilled and there are so many more clothes to wash! Then if you go on vacation, there are a plethora of things that can happen in your absence. Here are 5 tips to help plumb-proof your summer and maybe reduce that water bill a little.

  • If you are lucky enough to escape from the valley (hello San Diego!) you may want to turn down your water heater to save money. The average life of a water heater is 8 – 11 years. To check the age of your water heater, look at the serial number on the tank. The last four digits should be the month and year it was produced.
  • Kitchen sink issues. Entertaining family and friends is always a great time but foods such as pasta, rice and potato peels can turn into a gooey mess in your drain. Oil is another offender that can solidify making a perfect clog. Stringy vegetables like celery or fibrous like asparagus are a no-no as well.
  • Since you are likely spending a lot of time in the laundry room with the kids summer wardrobe changes, you might want to take a moment and check the hose. The lifetime of a rubber washing machine hose is three years.
  • Water your lawn at the right time of day. Early in the morning or in the evening when the sun goes down. Watering mid-day when the temps are the highest will just cause the water to evaporate.
  • Replace leaking faucets with new EPA WaterSense products. For example, the average family could save over 2,900 gallons per year with a WaterSense shower head.

Hopefully you find these tips helpful. We will make it through these hot summer months together! If you need any help with your plumbing issues, we are here for you!
